Friday was the gala grand opening of Summer Shorts 2012, a delightful mix of five short playlets at the Theater Behind the Store in Terlingua.
Produced and directed by Martha Stafford, the cast of Last Minute Low Budget Productions worked hard on these shorts, and it shows.
The evening started at 7 p.m. with a wonderful spread of hors d' oeuvres and time to reconnect with community members dressed in their finest. And then the show began.
Though the theater is very rough and was uncomfortably warm, handheld fans reminiscent of a 1950s revival, provided by the Cottonwood Store, cooled the assembled guests.
The players took us on a journey of light-hearted laughs that cooled us all. There was an early intermission so that we could go outside to observe the Blue Moon rising over the Chisos Mountains, and then precisely at 8:36 as predicted, the International Space Station made a dramatic dash across the sky before we returned to the theater for the remainder of the show. Neil Armstrong would have been proud!
You’re in luck: The plays continue Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m.
News from the program: Mercury Update…
Demolition of the old fire station is under way, and the survey and soil samples have been completed. We are well on our way to having the finalized plans for our community’s new performing arts center!
Once they have been submitted and approved, the grant writing and fundraising will be in full swing. A big FUNdraiser is planned for this fall, so watch for announcements.
